Description
In the works of Syni Papayannis color is often dictated by the material itself thus reflecting the variety of textures. Warm ochres are tilled by mint green while olive tones are mixed with shades of pole yellow, gold and burnt sienna. In the rare nocturnes midnight blue is woven with charcoal grey and threaded with pink silvers of light. Shadows of trees, mountains and sand-hills, freed from their outlines, inhabit the palimpsest places of the painter whereas the most recent works from this series investigate the structured urban volumes of cities. Tiny primers of matter, the works of Syni Papayannis refute the limits of the painted surface by physically grasping their rudimentary elements.
